How long is a CSCS card valid?

Updated 20 August 2026

Most CSCS cards are valid for 5 years from the date of issue. That covers the blue Skilled Worker card, the gold Supervisor and Advanced Craft cards, the black Manager card and the white Professional cards. The big exception: since 1 February 2025, a first-time Green Labourer card is valid for only 2 years — when you renew it, the renewal then runs for the full 5 years.

Validity by card type

  • Green Labourer card — 2 years for a first card (issued from 1 February 2025); renewals last 5 years. Cards issued before that date keep their original expiry.
  • Blue Skilled Worker card — 5 years. Requires an NVQ/SVQ Level 2 or an approved apprenticeship in the trade.
  • Gold Advanced Craft and Gold Supervisor cards — 5 years.
  • Black Manager card — 5 years.
  • Red cards (trainee, apprentice, experienced worker) — temporary cards with shorter validity, and most cannot be renewed: they're a stepping stone to a permanent card.

The expiry date is printed on the card itself, and any site can verify it electronically.

Renewing: the HS&E test comes first

Whatever the card, renewal runs through the CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test. You need a recent pass to apply — as part of the February 2025 changes, CSCS extended the test's validity for card applications to three years. Depending on the card, you may also need to show the underlying qualification or, for the Green card, evidence that you're still working in a labouring role.

The practical order is:

  1. Book the HS&E test a few months before the card expires. Test slots and processing time both eat into your margin.
  2. Pass the test, then apply for renewal through CSCS with your test pass and any supporting evidence.
  3. Keep the confirmation. Digital cards are issued quickly, but the gate checks the CSCS database — make sure the renewal has actually gone through before the old card lapses.

What happens on site with an expired card

A CSCS card isn't required by law — it's required by contract, and that makes the consequences immediate rather than theoretical. Nearly all principal contractors now check cards with CSCS Smart Check, the official app that verifies all 38 card schemes carrying the CSCS logo by scanning the chip or QR code. An expired card scans as not valid, and the standard response is refusal at the gate.

That means:

  • The worker is turned away and can't be deployed until the card is renewed — often a matter of weeks once you factor in the HS&E test.
  • You're paying wages for someone who can't get on site, or scrambling to re-plan the job.
  • Repeated card problems make you look sloppy to exactly the clients you want more work from.

Keeping track across a whole team

One card is easy. Fifteen workers with a mix of Green, Blue and Gold cards — plus SMSTS and SSSTS certificates for the supervisors and first aid certificates — is a training matrix that needs checking every week, and someone has to remember to do the checking. That's where it goes wrong: not because the dates are unknown, but because nobody looked in time.

Put every expiry date in one place with automatic alerts. Start with our free training matrix template, or let a tool like Certly watch the dates for you — it emails you 90, 60 and 30 days before every expiry, so the HS&E test is booked long before the gate becomes a problem. You can try it free.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a CSCS card valid?

Most CSCS cards — including the blue Skilled Worker, gold Supervisor and Advanced Craft, and black Manager cards — are valid for 5 years from the date of issue. The exception is a first-time Green Labourer card issued since 1 February 2025, which is valid for 2 years; renewals of that card then last 5 years.

How do I renew a CSCS card?

You apply to renew through CSCS, and you'll need a recent CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test pass — CSCS extended the test's validity for card applications to three years as part of the February 2025 changes. Depending on the card, you may also need to show you still hold the relevant qualification or are still working in the role. Book the HS&E test well before the card expires, because you can't renew without it.

Can I work on site with an expired CSCS card?

In practice, no. Most principal contractors check cards at the gate with CSCS Smart Check, and an expired card scans as not valid — sites will typically refuse entry until it's renewed. A CSCS card isn't a legal requirement, but it's a near-universal contractual one on UK construction sites.

What is CSCS Smart Check?

CSCS Smart Check is the official app and website that verifies cards across all 38 schemes carrying the CSCS logo, by scanning the card's chip or QR code. It shows whether a card is genuine, what it covers and whether it has expired — so a lapsed card is spotted in seconds at the gate.
